In Lisbon you can eat outside for most of the year — but only under cover. Il Matriciano has two outdoor areas on Rua de São Bento: a covered esplanade seating about twenty under a pergola, and about ten uncovered seats. The covered side works across the calendar and through a shower; the uncovered side is a fair-weather table. "Has an esplanade" tells you nothing in November
Outdoor seating in Lisbon is listed as a single feature, as though it were one thing. In July that is harmless. In November it is the difference between a good evening and a short one.
The variable that actually matters is cover. An uncovered table is a fair-weather proposition in any month — it depends on the sky on the day. A covered table is a different asset: it turns outdoor dining from a summer plan into something you can book in March, or October, or on a bright still day in January. Lisbon's winters are mild by northern-European standards, but mild is not the same as dry, and the covered tables are the ones that survive the difference.

The three areas, and which months each is for
Il Matriciano has around eighty seats split across three spaces that behave quite differently through the year.

The honest summary: the covered esplanade is bookable for far more of the year than most people assume, and the uncovered seats are worth asking for only when you can see the sky.
Lunch outside and dinner outside are different decisions
They fail for different reasons, which is why the same table can be right in June and wrong in October.
At lunch, the problem is sun. From late spring through summer the midday sun makes uncovered tables hard work rather than pleasant, and the covered side becomes the better half of the service, not the compromise. This is also the quieter option for a working table — the restaurant sits directly opposite the Assembleia da República and the room fills with people on a schedule. At dinner, the problem is temperature. Dinner starts at 19:30, by which time the sun is no longer the issue and the evening air is. What does not change: the menu and the hours
Some kitchens treat outdoor tables as overflow and send a reduced menu out to them. That is the thing worth checking anywhere, and it is the reason "has an esplanade" is not by itself useful information.
Here the full Roman menu is served in all three areas, at identical hours, all year: Monday to Saturday, lunch 12:30 to 15:00 and dinner 19:30 to 23:00, closed Sunday. Booking language that gets you the table you meant
Two sentences do almost all the work.
- Ask when you book, not on arrival. Roughly thirty outdoor seats against fifty indoors means the outside is the first thing to go in good weather.
- Say which outside you mean. "Covered" and "outside" are not the same request here, and in the shoulder months they are genuinely different evenings.

If the weather turns after you sit down
The covered side stays usable through light rain, which is most of what a Lisbon shower amounts to. The uncovered seats do not. If it turns and you are on the open side, and there is room inside, the staff will happily move you — the dining room holds around fifty.

"Tem esplanada" não diz nada em novembro
A esplanada aparece nas listagens como uma única característica, como se fosse uma coisa só. Em julho é inofensivo. Em novembro é a diferença entre uma boa noite e uma noite curta.
A variável que conta mesmo é a cobertura. Uma mesa descoberta é sempre uma aposta no bom tempo — depende do céu naquele dia. Uma mesa coberta é outro activo: transforma a esplanada de plano de verão em coisa que se reserva em março, ou em outubro, ou num dia de janeiro luminoso e sem vento. As três zonas, e para que meses serve cada uma
O Il Matriciano tem cerca de oitenta lugares repartidos por três espaços que se comportam de forma bem diferente ao longo do ano.

O resumo honesto: a esplanada coberta é reservável durante muito mais tempo do ano do que a maioria das pessoas supõe, e os lugares descobertos só valem a pena quando se consegue ver o céu.
Almoçar lá fora e jantar lá fora são decisões diferentes
Falham por razões diferentes, e é por isso que a mesma mesa pode estar certa em junho e errada em outubro.
Ao almoço, o problema é o sol. Do fim da primavera até ao verão, o sol do meio-dia torna as mesas descobertas mais trabalho do que prazer, e a zona coberta passa a ser a melhor metade do serviço, e não o remédio. É também a opção mais sossegada para uma mesa de trabalho — o restaurante fica mesmo em frente à Assembleia da República e a sala enche-se de gente com horário. Ao jantar, o problema é a temperatura. O jantar começa às 19:30, altura em que o sol já não é a questão e o ar da noite é. O que não muda: a ementa e o horário
Há cozinhas que tratam as mesas de fora como excedente e lhes mandam uma ementa reduzida. É isso que vale sempre a pena confirmar, e é a razão pela qual "tem esplanada" não é, por si só, informação útil.

As palavras que garantem a mesa que queria
Duas frases fazem quase todo o trabalho.
- Peça na reserva, não à chegada. Cerca de trinta lugares no exterior contra cinquenta no interior significa que, com bom tempo, o exterior é a primeira coisa a esgotar.
- Diga qual das zonas quer. "Coberta" e "lá fora" não são o mesmo pedido aqui, e nos meses de meia-estação são noites genuinamente diferentes.
