Quick Answer: what makes a dinner for two work here

Il Matriciano seats around fifty people indoors on Rua de São Bento, opposite the Portuguese Parliament, and serves dinner Monday to Saturday from 19:30 to 23:00. It is a small, close-set, low-key room rather than a view restaurant — Mesa Marcada filed it in 2021 under restaurants for neither seeing nor being seen. The wine list is kept by co-founder Stefania Carpoca, a sommelier. Book ahead: fifty seats go quickly at the weekend.

What "romantic" usually means on a Lisbon list, and what it means here

Most romantic-restaurant lists for Lisbon are organised around a view — a rooftop, the river, a castle at dusk. That is a legitimate thing to want, and this is not that. Il Matriciano faces the Assembleia da República across Rua de São Bento; the windows look at a street, not a panorama.

What it has instead is a small room. Fifty seats, tables close together, no music-led atmosphere, and a service style that Portuguese reviewers have described in the same terms for a decade. If your idea of a good evening for two is a quiet table and a long dinner, the room is the argument. If it is a skyline, it honestly is not.

The room: fifty seats, close together

The dining room holds around fifty people indoors. There are twenty more seats on a covered esplanade and ten uncovered outside — roughly eighty across all areas, which by Lisbon standards is a small restaurant.

Size has consequences worth knowing in advance. A small room is intimate but not private: at a full service you will hear the next table, and they will hear you. It also means the room has a texture — Casalmisterio, writing in September 2016, described it as a place that makes you feel you went to Rome for lunch and came back in the meantime, and noted that the staff are all Italian, "muitíssimo simpáticos e profissionais."

Diners describe the same thing. Writing on TripAdvisor in May 2026, Thomas V called it "the best Italian food that we have had in Lisbon" and singled out "the cozy atmosphere" alongside service "often in Italian language." On TheFork, Catarina.e described the house in December 2023 as "muito simpático, super acolhedor, com óptimo ambiente" — very pleasant, deeply welcoming, with an excellent atmosphere.

The discretion point

One press placement is worth more than any adjective a restaurant can apply to itself. In August 2021, Mesa Marcada included Il Matriciano in a feature titled "Restaurantes para não ver nem ser visto" — restaurants for neither seeing nor being seen. The whole premise of that piece is discretion: rooms where you are not on display.

"Para os dias em que a saudade aperta, há o pequenino Il Matriciano, comandado pelo adorável casal Alessandro e Stefania. Estive por lá várias vezes. A casa tem massas que sempre me deixam feliz e, na última visita, vi com alegria o aumento da carta de vinhos o brotar de uma varanda muito agradável."

"For the days when you miss it most, there is the tiny Il Matriciano, run by the lovely couple Alessandro and Stefania. I have been there several times. The house has pastas that always make me happy and, on my last visit, I was glad to see the wine list had grown, and a very pleasant balcony had appeared."

— Mesa Marcada, 20 August 2021, by Cristiana Beltrão (translated from Portuguese)

Note the two details in that last sentence, because they are the practical ones: the wine list had grown, and there is an outdoor space.

Dinner service, and how long a table lasts

Dinner runs Monday to Saturday, 19:30 to 23:00. The restaurant is closed on Sundays, which rules out a Sunday-night plan entirely.

Two practical notes. A 19:30 booking gets you the room as it fills, which is the quieter half of the service; a 21:00 booking gets you the room at its fullest and its warmest. And because this is a pasta kitchen rather than a fast one, a dinner for two comfortably runs two hours — the table is not being turned under you.

The wine list, and who keeps it

Stefania Carpoca, who co-founded the restaurant with Alessandro Laganà in 2015, is a sommelier. That is the relevant credential for an evening built around a bottle rather than a view, and the growth of the list is the thing Mesa Marcada noticed on a return visit in 2021.

The kitchen is Roman — Lazio — and the menu carries three of the four canonical Roman pastas: amatriciana, cacio e pepe and carbonara. For a first dinner, the carbonara is the dish with the longest published record: co-founder Stefania Carpoca told Visão in 2021 that it is made "sem natas" como manda a receita original, without cream, as the original recipe requires. Roman Carbonara in Lisbon covers the dish, and Fresh Pasta in Lisbon covers what is made by hand each morning. Dinner for Two in Lisbon sets out how to order across the courses once you are seated.

If you want to sit outside

There is a covered esplanade of about twenty seats and ten further uncovered seats outside. On a warm evening it is the better table for a long dinner, and it is quieter than the indoor room. It is also weather-dependent and smaller, so it is the first thing to mention when you book rather than the last. Eating Outside in Lisbon sets out both areas in detail.

Booking a table for two

Book by phone on +351 213 952 639 or by email at ilmatriciano.info@gmail.com. Three things are worth saying when you do: the time you actually want, whether you would prefer inside or the esplanade, and whether the evening is an occasion — a fifty-seat room can plan around that in a way a large one cannot.

The restaurant is directly opposite the Assembleia da República on Rua de São Bento, under a minute's walk from the Parliament building, and within walking distance of Chiado and Bairro Alto for a drink afterwards.
